Tibetan Freedom Concert is the name given to a series of rock festivals held in North America, Europe and Asia from 1996 onwards to support the cause of Tibetan independence. The concerts were originally organized by the Beastie Boys and the Milarepa Fund. The idea for a Live Aid-style concert for Tibet was conceived by members of the group during the 1994 Lollapalooza Tour. Organized in 1996, the first concert was held in June in San Francisco and featured acts such as The Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Björk, Smashing Pumpkins, Cibo Matto, Rage Against the Machine, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. It drew 100,000 people and raised over $800,000 for Tibetan and social justice causes. Additional concerts were held until 2003, generating public awareness about the Tibetan plight, particularly amongst young people. The concerts helped spur the growth of Students for a Free Tibet worldwide. Radiohead performed at the Tibetan Freedom Concert at the RFK Memorial Stadium in Washington on the 14th of June 1998. But just hours before Saturday’s start, the nation’s capital was being pounded by torrential downpours. Weather reports were grim and by the time Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters were funking up the stage (as part of the group’s twenty-fifth anniversary reunion), a fat rain was falling. Just as Hancock introduced special guest Guru (from Gang Starr) for some free-form jazzhop, a bolt of lightning slammed into the crowd. Herbie & Co. were quickly ushered from the stage, ambulances searching for wounded weaved through the infield and after an hour the calm voice of R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe announced the rest of the days cancellation. Luckily Sunday’s weather was better and the band cut their setlist to make room for the Satuday acts that were at the stadium, some acts were stuck at other towns as they had to stop all flights to Washington on Saturday. The Wallflowers, Sean Lennon, Pulp and Sonic Youth received very little audience response during their muffled sets, and it wasn’t until Radiohead showed up, originally scheduled for Saturday, that the fans started enjoying themselves. Lead singer Thom Yorke was masterful, offering chilling takes on “Karma Police,” “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” and an extended “Creep,” a song stricken from recent performances. Stipe joined the band to sing lead on “Lucky,” perfectly capturing the spirit of such a hot-ticket event. This dvd features this show as well as tons of other videos and live material.
