In the twilight of the day
do I see the sun disappear
behind the bloodred horizon
I can feel the insatiable night
consume all light
When Ragnarok emerged at the scene with their demos in 1994 and 1995 it showed a band with tons of potential and a band that many thought would be huge if they just got all the pieces of the puzzle right. Their debut album Nattferd (1995) kept that raw feeling of the demos but the band would step up with their next effort the 1996 album, Arising Realm. This was more polished and had an increased amount of keyboards. This keyboard work added a lot to the bands raw black metal and Thymes rasping voice. The synths of Arising Realm were performed by Pål Espen Johannesen, as well as Shagrath of Dimmu Borgir, and they do bear some semblance to what that band was releasing at the time. This album and the following Diabolical Age (2000) are probably the bands best two albums and the fact that they arent mentioned in the history of Norse black metal in the same way that Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk or Enthrone Darkness Triumphant are is a shame. It has the best of both worlds; the primal savagery of Norse black metal and the symphonic accessibility that both Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth had made popular around this time.
