Ralph Lundsten was one of Swedens most important composer. A real pioneer in electronic music but he also worked as an author, filmmaker and visual artist. His 1982 album The New Age includes the cream of the crop of Swedish musicians at the time Björn Inge (drums), Peter Sundell (drums), Lars Hoflund (electric bass), Jan Schaffer (electric guitar), Björn J:Son Lindh (flute and keyboards), Wlodek Gulgowski (keyboards), Sven Berger (lyre, flute and gemshorn) and Tomas Ledin (distorted voice). Ulf Hinders cover art will draw you in and the music on here will do the same. New age can be a crazy thing, because the whole essence of the thinking in this musical wave is liberation and the establishment of new paths and Ralph Lundsten is the correct person when it comes to the experimental sphere that is new age. The liner notes from Ralph Lundsten describes how most ordinary people move around in our society. He believes that new age can be the path to a fundamental spiritual change of mentality, which can free us from the false chains that society has imposed on us, to eventually end up in a utopian world, a garden of pleasure – Garden Of Delight. And this is the recurring theme for the entire record, described with sound and moods. Rarely have I listened to such well-balanced music that simultaneously points in so many different directions. It takes an unusual musical overview to make this style succeed, and Ralph Lundsten succeeds incredibly well on this release. This gives the above quote some weight when we hear the seriousness and complexity of the music. Each track has its own distinctive character, and that tells me as a listener something about how many tools Ralph and the band have at their disposal in the musical toolbox. The listening experience is thrilling and Ralph Lundsten and The Andromeda All Stars have succeeded with The New Age. The music is diverse and full of presence and emotion. If you have to start somewhere in your new age listening, this record will not be a stupid choice.
