Dallas, Texas Rigor Mortis has been regarded as the first death metal band to be signed to a major label Capitol Records. Their classic thrash/death metal album was released at the height of the PMRC’s grip on the music scene and it was truly a scary time. Not because of the menacing music but because of the horrors of big brother. A deep seeded fear of the power of satan had parents running scared. Death metal was also a new genre in the 1980’s and the term death metal was used a lot more in the 1990’s. On Rigor Mortis debut album were manage to trace the entire development of speed-to-thrash-to-death metal with the gradual evolution of their raw, violent sound but its still more thrash than death though. The instrumentation is thrashy sounding death metal. I would say there’s a little dash of death metal in the vocals. It’s not exactly a death metal album. For its time, yes. By today’s standards, it’s thrash metal and many even consider it being a Thrash Metal classic. Sure and honestly, there’s nothing here that anyone hasn’t heard before by many other bands but here we have some relentless, extremely long, constantly fast and tremolo-picked guitar workouts and solos. Guitarist Mike Scaccia would have later joined Ministry.
