Phoenix thrashers Sacred Reich impressed many with their debut album Ignorance. With Phil Rind’s interest in hardcore punk and socio-political issues, Ignorance does represent an element of purity in what the thrash movement was all about, and considering that some of the songs were written when the band were mid-teens, the unbridled anger that can come from that period in someone’s life also showed a maturity way beyond their years. The Surf Nicaragua EP followed in November of 1988 and it continued to explore the social and political themes that Phil had shown interest in even from the early stages of the band. Surf Nicaragua does remain a classic record that has not lost its power in the slightest and its album cover became iconic quick and were adorning t-shirts at the time. With two such strong albums behind them it was time for the band to visit Europe for the first time. So their first tour in Europe saw them perform a New Year Gig in Oordegem in Belgium in 1988 with Motorhead, Destruction, Candlemass and Coroner. This album features the bands show that night and for being an audience recording from 1988 it has a killer sound. Phil was sick and had problems with his voice but still quick with his one liners. Its hard to say if its the music or Phil’s hilarious commentary in between songs that are the most fun. None should have been surprised if they had kicked Phils ass in the parking lot after show. This is an absolute great piece of metal history.
