The history of Safari starts with the Swedish/Hungarian rock band P.S. Band, founded by Gyula Papp and Bela Svärdmark in 1982. The style of P.S. Band was defined as laid back soft rock. The Swedish label Scabri Records heard the musc of P.S. Band and fell in love with the material and saw their potential. Scabri was a label that only lasted for a few years and released a handful of albums and ten singles. However Scabri’s contract came with several terms; first, they had to choose a name that sounded good internationally, it became Safari. The other condition proved to be a tougher nut. Only three of the members Gyula Papp, Bela Svärdmark and Miklos Varga were able to stay so with sore heart they said goodbye to the other members of P.S. Band. The three members also had to take stage names that sounded less Hungarian so they became Julio Pappa, Bela Stephan S and Miki Varga. Then Scabri wanted the three members to team up with some professional Swedish session musicians – Janne Schaffer, Christian Veltman and Magnus Persson to start the recordings of Safari’s debut album, That Was Then This Is Now, in Gothenburg, Sweden. Bela Svärdmark had also been playing with Puss & Kram, De Funkar and been guitarist on Hungarian 70s rock act Skorpio’s 1978 album The Run.
