Rare original 1986 private pressing. Limited 500 copies

Sanz was a French heavy metal act formed and named after guitarist and vocalist Phil Sanz back in 1982. The band released a four track demo in 1984 but never managed to secure a record contract and in the end decided to finance and release their debut album themselves. The end result is the album Sweet Revenge that was released in 1986. One thing that I love about this album is the passion and determination that oozes from this disc. The band probably played their local bar in Nantes in front of 15 friends that screamed and clapped their hands after a few beers. It was a fun time and Sanz and his band members set out to conquer the world. If they only could get that signed contract and get an album out then the big arenas would be waiting. Entering the Studio Do to record the material they had worked on so hard and now was going to put it down on a glorious vinyl. The adrenaline when everyone in the band aimed for the same goal. To create a metal album that would go down in history. The eight track presented here is heavy metal and some of the tracks has parts that are rather fast that would satisfied any speed lover. Phil Sanz isn’t the guitar virtuoso he might think he is but he’s hardly a slacker either and the band do their best to sound tight. Something that should have been questioned though is if Sanz really was the best choice as a vocalist. But as his picture is on the front cover and on most of the back photos too then I guess that he was a strong band leader that you really didn’t question if you wanted to stay in the band. His hoarse vocals gives the complete album a bitter sweet taste. Phil Sanz isnt a great singer but somehow it suites the album in a way too. It just ads more taste to that “when you’re dream is bigger than you’re talent” kind of vibe. I don’t mind playing this album once in a while just because it feels like a time traveler to go back to a time when everybody wanted to be in a hardrock band and everything felt possible. I don’t want to think about what happened when the album arrived from the pressing plant and when each band member got 100 copies to sell and the positive media responses were absent and the album proved to be hard to sell and in the end a failure. How soon the dream faded away and the band fell apart. There were plenty of those bands around that released one album and then disappeared. Many dreams that turned to dust. But once in a while these albums needs to get a spin on the record player just to feel and remember that youthfully hunger and the passion. Albums like this aren’t done anymore
