A fresh death metal band from Brazil that plays on the thrashier end of the spectrum, Sepulchral Whore indulges in Hell’s irreverent depravity in “Everlasting Morbid Delights” as it pays homage to the early progenitors of this most obscene style. Nowhere is Death so near as in “Horrifying The Weak”, with what sounds like a slower version of the “Born Dead” riff from “Leprosy”, or “In Slumber They Succumb”, where the band beats the unforgiving snare into a mechanical mechanism before setting off some hair-raising and original soloing that gives little nods to the guitar gods of yesteryear. The very Morbid Angel sounding opening in “Malicious Conflagration”, produced just like the bassy and rolling guitars in “Covenant”, becomes a raw and open echo across an imposing hall and begins a vocal delivery that sounds like it’s giving a speech to an unholy army about its latest ambition for conquest. In a heavily accented and echoing voice the lyrics do get a little awkward at times while attempting to finish a lyric after the sound has already outrun what was written down, like when vocalist, Necrospinal, says “let’s breathe antagonism”. Despite these minor wonky moments, the great chanting of “no mythical devotion, deny the holy whore, spreading damnation, we set hellfire at this torch” is very engaging and uplifts this thrashier aspect of Sepulchral Whore’s death metal. The only time that Sepulchral Whore turns down its hellacious hedonism is in the instrumental “Rotten Wings Of Creation” where the airy sound of Iron Maiden’s “The Clansman” meets a medieval Iberian theme to create a sinister tone within an apocalyptic soundscape. It’s easy to hear the Iron Maiden bass flourishes rising to the top of this song as this diversion from the band’s norm seems to lay some groundwork for an engrossing evolution in this band’s future. The personality expressed through “Everlasting Morbid Delights”, and its almost giddy reach to profane anything presenting propriety, makes this an invigorating and refreshing first EP from a band with great potential and solid preparation that seems to take its time getting things right before heading into the studio. Having started in 2015 and only just releasing its first album in May of 2017, Sepulchral Whore seems set to secure a solid spot in many a death metal fan’s music rotation and to keep the old school sound alive and well.
