Sinister’s got to be one of the most inconsistent death metal bands around today. While their first two albums, Cross the Styx and Bastard Saints are minor death metal classics and the third album Hate was a solid death metal release, since then things have been a bit shaky in the Sinister camp. It all came to a head in 2003 with the awful Savage or Grace album and I figured that was the end of the road for the band till Afterburner turned up a couple of years ago and redeemed the band to some extent. 2008 sees the band release its latest album on the death metal hordes and The Silent Howling is quite an impressive recording that has almost managed to erase the bitter taste of those mid-period albums. The album starts with the pounding Republic of the Grave and it’s immediately apparent that the energy levels are quite high. It’s that energy and a sense of momentum that carries this album forward. The death metal on offer is pretty much Sinister from the Hate era but the song writing has evolved over time so that melody, aggression and even the word progression are not just clichéd buzz words but actually mean something. It all comes together on the superb epic title song in the middle of the album and the title song stands up to anything the band has done in the past. I’m not normally a fan of death metal songs that go over the ten minute mark, but here Sinister manage to pull it off with a combination of brutal death metal riffs, melody and big fat grooves. The best part is that the song doesn’t feel like it’s over ten minutes long. At the same time, I have to say that The Silent Howling is not a one song album. Every song on this album manages to capture interest and sound quite impressive without actually doing anything that’s new for the band. There’s solidity and depth to this album that’s been missing from the band for a while and the consistency in song writing really helps make The Silent Howling a solid outing from a band that’s had more misses than hits in its career. In fact it seems like a distillation of everything that made Sinister great in the past. This is one of those albums that you’ll like more and more with every listen and perseverance is the key. The Silent Howling is at the end of the day a solid death metal album in a year that’s already seen its fair share and best of all it’s a real grower.
