Slayer shows are legendary for their brutality. Current Slayer concerts are fun but things were different in the early days. Crowds were passionate to the point of being crazed. Sometimes this passion could get out of hand, leading to bodily harm and property damage. Fans with no apparent concern for their safety dived from the balcony onto the packed floor below. Mirrors that lined the walls were kicked out. The sprinkler system was ripped from the ceiling. By all accounts, it was absolute chaos inside a venue when Slayer played. The World Sacrifice 88-89 Tour was probably the worst. The band gotten into problems several times already during the US leg in 1988. Riots was common during this tour, fans that couldnt get into the sold out arena thrashed places up and military with helacopters had even been called in on some occasions. Fans that were inside started moshpits that were real violent and sometimes Tom Araya was forced to address the crowd during the set, asking for “cooperation.” A futile request for the crowd to step back fell on deaf ears. The Felt Forum in New York was torned to pieces on the 31st of August. The barricades broke and fans ripped the seats apart and starting throwing them around. Tom Araya asked the staff to turn on the lights when he, clearly agitated, pleaded with the crowd to “Stop throwing these fucking cushions around”. Attempts at intervention were useless and the damage had been done. Araya is correct when he tells the crowd, “We can probably never play here again because of this shit.” Slayer then closed their set with “Angel of Death” as seat cushions continued to fly. Finally the show was over and Tom signed off by shouting, “Good night, assholes!”. Rumors of this violent tour reached the European booking agencies before the tour even hit Europe in 1989 but luckily the European tour went off better than the US leg some months earlier. This album was recorded at Maaspoort in Den Bosch in Netherlands on the 21st of January 1989. On this part of the World Sacrifice European Tour they had Overkill as support act. Cool to hear the band in all its glory during this tour. The World Sacrifice tour was one of the most important ones in the Slayer history and all the violence and chaos that surrounded it really built up the Slayer legacy.
