Although it did not enter any charts, Hell Awaits was hailed upon its release as Slayer’s most progressive recording, featuring much darker thrash-oriented style, with unusual arrangements such as varying tempos, and dissonant nuances that paved the way to a wholly distinctive sound all their own. It was an album that was incredibly ahead of its time. According to Metal Blade founder Brian Slagel the album has sold over 1,000,000 records worldwide. To promote Hell Awaits, Slayer embarked on the Combat Tour with Venom and Exodus. Exodus guitarist Gary Holt commented, We immediately bonded with the Slayer guys. It was two bands of friends playing with one band of heroes, you know? We were just star-struck. When the Combat Tour ended in April of 1985 the band had one month off before going out on the road again. Belgium, Holland, Uk and German dates followed in May and June before ending the tour with gigs in Canada and Usa between August and November. On the 6th and 7th of September the band performed two shows at The Country Club in Reseda, Los Angeles, Californa. The first of those two shows had Tyrant and Agent Steel on the bill while the band had D.R.I and Abattoir with them on the second night. Their gig on the first night was taped and has been pressed onto this beautiful album. The 35 year old tape has been cleaned up as much as possible making this the best sounding version of this set so far
