From mountain peak to valley deep, Sleepwulfs second album Sunbeams Curl is a journey that is dripping with the seductive sounds of riff rock psychedelic proto doom. This isnt new to Sweden. Bands like Witchcraft and Graveyard are masters of the genre and any of these bands albums wouldve sounded right at home in the 70s. So Sleepwulf isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel, and Sunbeams Curl isn’t exactly breaking any new ground. Conjuring the sounds of bands such as Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, Sleepwulf have summoned an album that oozes with fuzzy riffs, sordid tales and seductive occultism. This style has been done a lot over the last 10-15 years, but if you’re going to do stoner, doom, and proto-metal, do it well, and Sleepwulf most certainly do that. This record is a prime example of Swedish retro-doom done right. Sunbeams Curl sounds fantastic, all instrumentation is clear, fuzzy, but not overwhelmingly so. The tones are warm, Robertson sounds like a cross between Bobby Liebling and Ian Anderson, while delivering interesting lyrics on well-worn subjects in this genre. The album was recorded in their own woodland studio outside Kristianstad, Sweden. To capture a live organic sound everything was done live onto an old tape machine. Compared to their debut this sounds both heavier and more dynamic, building upon every aspect of their debut. If one is in the mood for some retro-doom, one could do a lot worse than Sunbeams Curls.
