Description
Neat Records was arguably the most instrumental label in the revival of heavy metal in the early 80s in the UK. The movement was known as the new wave of British heavy metal or NWOBHM for short. The label is most notable for the early releases of Newcastle band Venom who are widely credited with the invention of black metal. While none of Neat Records acts really broke through to the mainstream themselves, Venom, Raven, Blitzkrieg and Jaguar particularly are acknowledged as major influences on a host of major American thrash metal bands such as Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. Other notable acts to release music through Neat Records include White Spirit (notable as the then band of current Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers) and Persian Risk (notable as the original band of Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell). One of the lesser talked about releases was the one and only self titled album from Slutt. This album is also mentioned as Model Youth in some discography lists even though that title isnt mentioned anywhere on the cover, label or spine. This has also been compared to Poison and Aerosmith and i dont understand how. Im not even sure i want to put them into the glam genre. Sure the band wares make-up and hairspray, they have some glammy lyrics and song titles and they seems to have borrowed the stage clothes from English band Wrathchild but the music on the other hand doesnt sound anything like Poison or Aerosmith. This is much heavier. Just listen to the opening track Angel and within seconds you can hear that its produced by Cronos of Venom. Woman Of The Nite sounds like Shout At The Devil era of Motley Crue and then we have the thrash metal like T.K.O.. No info can be found on internet of the band or the band members. The last track is recorded live in Newcaste and my guess is that this band played live a lot and had their loyal followers somewhere in the northern part of England and thats what caught Neats interest. The Neat And Tidy (history of Neat records) book barely mention the album and the Neat records history d/cd compilation “The Flame Burns On: The Best Of Neat Records” (released by Castle Music/Sanctuary in 2002) only features a short 19 seconds intro taken from the album, so its easy to say that Neat records and NWOBHM fans dont really want to talk about this album. However i cant agree that this would be the worst recording Neat records ever released. Jay C isnt a great singer and the overall album sounds quite sloppy but at least it has some balls compared to some glam bands that they seems to be compared to. The album didn’t sell and not many copies were distributed either so the album have become among the rarest of Neats releases and have been sold more than once for over 100 US dollars.
