Status Quo had a hit single from their debut album, Picturesque Matchstickable Messages From The Status Quo, released in 1968. The single was the now psychedelic classic Pictures Of Matchstick Men (a Top Ten hit in the UK and reaching number 12 in the US). But when the following album Spare Parts didnt get the attention the band wanted they decided to refashion themselves as a hard rock boogie band in 1970 with their Ma Kelly’s Greasy Spoon album. It was here that organ player Roy Lynes decided to quit and The Frantic Four were born. The Frantic Four was Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan. Just reading these names will give any Quo fan goosebumps. It took them a couple of albums to really find their feet, including 1971’s underrated Dog Of Two Head. But when the band shifted record label then things moved fast and when the band released the awesome Piledriver 1972 then they had that barnstorming album that propelled them right up onto the a-list in the UK. Piledriver set a template for Quo to follow over the next five years, 1972 to 1976 unquestionably representing the band’s peak years. Hard-driving, boogie-fuelled rock, mixed with a light and shade dynamic that the band’s critics constantly refused to acknowledge the existence of. This album features tracks from those early psychedelic years to the early Frantic Four years and just up to that turning point in the bands career. Interesting listening for sure
