Description

A radio broadcast from KRTU Studio 21 in San Antonio, Texas on the 3rd of August 1979. A 24-year-old Vaughan, nearly 4 years away from the release of his first studio album, performs with his Double Trouble band mates: Chris Layton, drummer, Jackie Newhouse, bassist, Lou Ann Barton on vocals and Johnny Reno on tenor. Everyone was listening to disco and punk at the time, and the blues had kind of gone underground. Houston’s Lightnin’ Hopkins and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, from Orange, Texas, were local favourites and then there were ZZ Top. For a brief period of time, both Stevie and ZZ Top shared the same manager: Bill Ham and Dusty Hill and Stevie grew up in Dallas, attended the same high school and were in the same PE class. The Fabulous Thunderbirds, featuring Stevie Ray’s brother Jimmie, were making a name for themselves and were favourites around town. White boys usually didn’t play the blues this good, but the T-Birds flat-out rocked. So many were eager to hear Lou Ann’s band, because they were cut from the same Austin cloth and featured Jimmie’s little brother. And anyone and everyone who saw Lou Ann Barton and Double Trouble in 1979 was amazed. Actually, it wasn’t the whole band people noticed, it was the guitar player — a slicked-down dude name of Stevie Ray. Stevie Ray Vaughn would within years became one of the guitarist that single handed would help give blues its revival in the 80s. Lou Ann’s got a great voice, but man! Stevie Ray ripped a few fiery solos and everyone just went whoa, this boy can PLAY. And play he did — over his head, behind his head, with his tongue. This Stevie Ray Vaughan was a hellhound and it was just a matter of time before everyone would hear about this guitar talent who surely made a deal with the devil. Now, long after his death, he is regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in the history of music. In all honest i must say that i love those early recordings with Stevies guitar playing together with Lou Ann’s wonderful blues voice (on this show it takes up to the middle of the set before Lou Ann enters the show). I cant see why this disc shouldn’t be essential for any guitar lover or Stevie Ray Vaughan fan. Limited 350 copies
