Mega rare original Vertigo Swirl UK pressing with gatefold cover

The obscure British band Still Life released a self-titled album on Vertigo in the early ’70s. The record was early organ-dominated progressive rock, its lyrical themes dwelling upon uneasy doubt and sadness, the melodies coloured with the gothic classicism prevalent in much of the genre during the period. “People in Black,” “Don’t Go,” “Witches,” “Love Song No. 6 (I’ll Never Love You Girl),” “Dreams,” “Time” — the titles indicate that these fellows were both morbid and ambitious. You can always wonder what trip they were on they wrote lyrics like “I’m up on a cloud selling popcorn to a priest,” (from Dreams). Their sound is organ-dominated early British prog with a good bass thread so typical of that era, that can now be considered proto-prog. With odd lyrics, and a rather strange gatefold artworksleeve of a flowered skull (that could easily fitted a Grateful Dead album), Still Life is a curiosity and enjoyable, but by no means an essential record and little is known of the future adventures (if any) of their members after having disbanded in the following years. Their only album appeared on the legendary Vertigo label with the Swirl design and a 6360 catalogue number, which makes it very collectible and now fetches small fortunes.
