This is it! This is the perfect Sunn O))) live record. This captures the feel, the range, the sonic hellstorm of seeing them live. If you have seen them live then this is the only thing that can recaptures that awesome feeling. Yet, it is not a live retread of studio material. It is made of four unique pieces, all made for the space of performance. Which, for those who are curious, is an old medieval church in Norway. Why Dost Thou Hide Thyself In Clouds – starts with low drones, before the organ comes in, Attila’s voice soaring above it all! The acoustics of this space truly showcase his amazing range. He achieves low moaning notes that are spine-chilling. It’s just him and the organ for a long time, but it’s never less than riveting. It becomes so thoroughly engrossing, the most shattering moment is when the song abruptly ends. Rarely has sudden silence been used so effectively. Cannon begins with analogue synth spook and low end guitar rumble. You hear a trombone wend it’s way between the chords. It’s squelch and scatter, the forlorn horn rising from the tarpit occasionally. The chords continue, their roots growing deeper and louder as the organ and Attila’s demonic whispers astound. Then the guitars grind louder and louder, wrestling this sound beast back into submission as they fade alongside the organ. Cymatics begins with fractured guitar sounds reminiscent of the beginning of Flight Of the Behemoth. The track moves subtly along before the guitars take over. And the end, after everything fades out, and the audience finally snaps to applause, is one of the best live moments on a record. Buy it, steal it, just make sure you listen to it!
