Polish Szron performs some primitive black metal that draws heavily on the earliest of the Norwegian scene blending the likes of Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, and Satyricon together in one menacing experience. Their 2010 tape, Freezing Eyes Of Hate, is a compilation of material released on different split releases over the years. The recording has an excellent lofi Darkthrone style of black metal. It has the Blaze In The Northern Sky/Total Death guitar tone and a very similar riffing style. The drums also mimic Fenriz’s blasts with muted bass hits and muted snare. The vocals sound very much like Trelldom, with occasional drawn out screams that really bring out the similarity, while still maintaining a more in the mix feel, not being as dominating. Even though its a compilation it still definitely flows very smoothly and has the type of cohesion that complete albums have. For all the hundreds of black metal bands that replicate Darkthrone, as well as the hundreds of black metal bands that wield a lofi sound, this band definitely both has the proper sound and the proper emotional affect. The guitars have the sloppy distortion and riffing style but there will be just the right amount of riff adjustments and occasional layering that shows the band really knows how to use the atmosphere and repetition to make these things stand out. At the same time, they definitely do not have a pretentious or deliberate feel to their song structures like the wave of post bands seem to (e.g. Wolves in the Throne Room, Krallice). Szron is something you should check out if youre into some of the pure Black Metal of the early 90’s. Szron does an excellent job of really making this material shine with production that is both harsh and audible at the same time.
