Although the sticker on the dvd describes it as a never before released concert by the Boomtown Rats, I believe this was actually available (on Betamax) in the late 70s/early 80s under the name A Tonic for the Troops (i.e. the name of their second album). It was also shown on German Television in 1979. People who saw it back then have been looking for this particular show for more than 25 years. The Hammersmith Odeon show is amazing. The sound quality is good for such and old concert. The enthusiasm of the band comes through wonderfully. Bob Geldof is an amazing frontman and does a great job engaging the audience. This is the The Boomtown Rats in their prime. They’re seen here, a year before I Dont Like Mondays was released, and unknowing that Rat Trap would soon be an extraordinarily famous tune in the near future. This dvd will make you feel exhausted after watching, as if you were actually at the show, witnessing it firsthand and doing the rat with Geldof. You’ll be on edge the entire time watching Geldof’s Jagger-esque moves and dynamic, vigorous performance skills. Also features live audio tracks of Neon Heart, Living on an Island and Mary of the Fourth Form, as well as two music videos from Geldof’s solo album Sex, Age, And Death, Pale White Girls and One for Me. Truly worth the buy, and a must have for any fan of Geldof and/or The Rats or anyone into New Wave Pop or Post-punk music or if youre into the late 70s Uk music scene.
