If you’re looking to find out more about the third season’s episodes then this is a must. Every episode is detailed and has the cast members, the guests, the source of the story, the background, etc. Those of us looking back for additional information about one of the best television series ever made will find Lowry’s reference useful and interesting. The book is packed with detail and, up to a point, satisfies viewers’ interest in knowing more about the series and in particular, about each episode. However, it is largely descriptive and informative; there is little in the way of analysis, let alone sustained exploration of ideas. There are plenty of other texts about the X-Files which do this, such as Deny All Knowledge: Reading the X-Files to satisfy those who wish to investigate from a more academic perspective. This is a good reference book for those who return to the early series and need a detailed guide to what they are watching.

Brian Lowry is the Los Angeles television editor for Daily Variety, the show-business trade newspaper, where he has worked since 1987 reporting on the TV industry in addition to writing reviews and the weekly column Changing Channels. During and after college he also freelanced for various publications, among them Starlog magazine.
