This two disc spectacular includes a first disc that features covers that Therion have recorded over the years and the second disc features other bands doing Therion covers. Given the diversity of the songs covered and the different bands covering songs, the quality and listening experience fluctuates quite a lot but the majority of the album is still positive regardless of that. The first disc features different covers from Metallica, Accept, Venom, Thin Lizzy, Fleetwood Mac, Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate and Motorhead and its great to hear Therion’s signature take on such an impressive selection of tracks. The Mercyful Fate cover Black Funeral even features ex-Candlemass vocalist Messiah Marcolin on vocals. The first disc is rounded up with live versions of Perennial Sophia and Raven of Dispersion. The second disc is where its gets interesting with a selection of unknown bands covering Therion tracks. The collection is made up of mostly Eastern European and Russian bands, except for the contribution of Belgium’s Theudho who cover their version of Schwarzalbenheim. This second disc kicks off with the cover of Ghost Warfare which couldn’t be a more powerful track to open up with. What the most surprising contribution on this second disc is the cover of To Mega Therion by Imperial Age who have toured with Therion themselves and also released their album Legacy Of Atlantis on Christofer Johnsson’s own record label; Adulruna Records. Overall, Blood Of The Dragon is a hailing success of a compilation album which is directly aimed at Therion’s core fan-base. The overall concept of the two discs works well and is split up brilliantly. Therion fans should without a doubt put this release on their collector’s shelf because they will surely enjoy it. However, for music fans that are not aware of Therion and their discography this album maybe a little less accessible. The overall quality on the album is good but sometimes lacks power that could have been avoided with a little bit more production but never the less it is still a thoroughly enjoyable album and a real must have for any Therion fans and enthusiasts.
