Czech Republics thrash metal gods Torrs history starts as early as 1977 when the founder of group Ota Heres (only 12 years old) began to play music with some friends. And so, slowly, during the beginning of the eighties the band started to form and in 1984 the band started to perform in Prague, mostly as openers for Arakain. The 1987 demo “Witchhammer” came out and started the golden era for the band. This demo was a huge success the band now played for full houses but then an article appeared that said they were a fascist band and the band was prohibited. This lead to an unwanted short break for the band and these problems also lead to some line-up changes. A year later the band had been cleared from the fascist accusations in another article and with new members in the band they soon released the “Torr Gang Live” tape and their first vinyl single. In 1990 came the classic first vinyl album “Armageddon” out on Multisonic records. This album came out at the exact right time. Metal had been forbidden and very underground but after the fall of communism it became a major culture in the Czech Republic for the youth. Rebellions teens were buying metal like crazy and Armageddon have been said that it sold about 40.000 in their home country. You could at these times se a lot of metal acts on the best selling lists. Even Masters Hammer got up there with both their own album and the Ultra Metal Compilation album. However things soon calmed down and the ones that had been buying metal music because it was fashionable soon stopped and soon metal was back where it belonged, among the most faithful. Torr second full length album was yet another evil and nihilistic effort in the name of Institut Klinicke Smrti. This albums shows exactly why Torr is such an amazing band. They have a number of different, distinct sounds and are by no means a one dimensional band. Essentially all their sounds boil down to a blending of thrash metal and early black metal, but like I said, they had a lot different methods to play it and would change it up pretty much from song to song. You would never hear them recycling ideas. This album showcases the band’s amazing ability to write some brilliant blackened thrash metal. The vocals are harsher then what you hear on the on the 80’s demo material but they also change from song to song. The riffing and song structures for the most part are also not as simplistic as the earlier stuff. This band really has a unique sound (or sounds) and will never be matched or reproduced, even though Nifelheim (Swe) do a pretty good job of showing how big of fans they are of this band through their music. But even then, they still can’t do it the same way the mighty Torr can. If you can find one of this two albums and like blackened thrash metal then dont hesitate to spend your money. It will be worth it
