Description

Named for a warrior god in Finnish mythology, Turisas are a heavy metal band whose music is an ambitious blend of symphonic metal, power metal, progressive rock, and Finnish folk music. Turisas were formed in Hameenlinna, a rural community in southern Finland. Eager to perform their songs that blended pagan folklore with bloody tales of warfare, Turisas immediately made a first attempt to record an album. The result was ‘Taiston Tie’ but it never saw release due to the group's dissatisfaction with the result. However a 2000 demo cd helped them get a contract with Century Media and the band finally released a proper album in 2004 called ‘Battle Metal’. ‘Battle Metal’ is a blend of folk (and viking) metal, melodic black metal and even some power metal, all within symphonic framework. A variety of elements are mixed with talent to create a mighty atmosphere. Some people say that ‘Battle Metal’ is incoherent at times due to many impetuous changes between song-parts. I partially agree and it also hints that Turisas wasn’t fully mature at the time it was released. Then again, those quick moves from passage to passage guarantee that the album doesn’t get boring. Folky guitar riffing morphs into straightforward metal assault which morphs into flute- or some other folk instrument-interlude and so on. ‘Battle Metal’ takes you into the middle of the old, heroic tales. It is a vast musical experience and once again shows what Finns are made of Track listing. 1. Victoriae And Triumphi Dominus 2. As Torches Rise 3. Battle Metal 4. The Land of Hope and Glory 5. The Messenger 6. One More 7. Midnight Sunrise 8. Among Ancestors 9. Sahti-Waari 10. Prologue for R. R. R. 11. Rexi Regi Rebellis 12. Katuman Kaiku
