Tyla, for those of you who live in a different world to mine, is something of a rock legend. Arguably, his legend is bigger than his career ever managed. As a singer for Dogs Damour he was on his way to stardom but the bands success was short-lived. Tyla however have never stopped doing music or playing live. He has his solo thing going and resurrect a Tyla version of Dogs Damour every now and then. Tyla fans love his music and his art and the way he just do things and some of them arent that well thought. So I wouldnt be surprised if there are more people that have heard stories about Tyla then there are people who have heard his music. Tyla’s book Dog Tales is not a biography but a book of autobiographical stories. Hear you can read tales of drug taking sitting alongside a trail across Europe with a broken foot, drinks bills being left for the record company to pay nestle amongst stories of error-prone friends — and all told in a delightfully random order. And each individual tale comes with its own illustration, which gives the book an added warmth and charm. The use of English is very much that of a man who walks his own path, and on his own admission the grammar is at best a flexible tool, but where as normally this would be the sort of thing having me clutching my bosom and swooning aghast — here, it is all part of the character of the man. If you’ve never heard of Tyla, or don’t own anything by The Dogs D’Amour, then chances are you won’t see what all this fuss is about. But for fans? For fans, it’s exactly the book you would expect, and want, him to write. Dog Tales is like sitting by a fire and listening to Tyla ramble on as the whisky flows and the sun comes up.
