Description

Napalm records re-issue with two bonus tracks

With a population of less than 50,000 and an area about the size of a large city, this group of tiny isles called the Faroe Islands in the Norwegian Sea is home to numerous descendents of Viking settlers from centuries ago and its here that Tyr reigns. Their second album Eric The Red was released on the small Tutl records in 2003 and was a big success in their home country but it was poorly distributed elsewhere. Tyr plays music that blends pagan folk music and viking metal, think Skyclad, Ensiferum and Cruachan. The tell tales of old Nordic folkore stores and incorporates this into their melodies. No death growls here – the singing is clear, bold and sonorous, with plenty of chanted refrains in English, Danish, and Faroese (derived from old Norse). It’s hard not to get chills during passages like the haunting chorus of Regin Smidur — those voices raised in unison could be echoing across a thousand years of their homeland’s history.
