This dvd was recorded at the second of two nights they played at the L.A. Coliseum during their The Joshua Tree Tour (18th of November 1987). During the first night the band performed One Tree Hill, a track the band rarely did live. The second night however got The Dalton Brothers inbetween the opening acts BoDeans and The Pretenders. This was a very rare suprise appearance indeed as it only happened three times (November 1st and 18th as well as at a gig on the 12th of December). The Dalton Brothers were Alton Dalton (Bono), Luke Dalton (Edge), Betty Dalton (Adam) and Duke Dalton (Larry). The band took the stage in cowboy hats, wigs and western wear, with some audience members reportedly unaware they were actually U2 in disguise. Alton Dalton affects an exaggerated southern accent and tells the crowd, “This is just like Farm Aid and we like it that a-way. You people are beautiful people.” Alton then introduces his “kid brother,” Luke, who takes the lead vocal on “Lost Highway,” a mournful, gospel-tinged tune Hank Williams recorded in 1949. Even Bono’s, er, Alton’s cheesy wig and goofy remarks to the audience (“It’s great to know that in Los Angeles it’s love, not money, that makes the world go ’round”) can’t disguise the fact that the band members shared an affection for the roots music that left their shores and eventually settled in the mountains of the eastern U.S. before ultimately spreading back throughout the world. The attendance this night was 66,462 people in an arean that had the capacity ot 71,000. Then shortly before the U2 show began, the Olympic Torch high above and behind the stage is lit — only the fourth time it’s ever happened. The previous occasions were two Olympic Games and a visit from Pope John Paul II just two months earlier. Bono dedicates “Sunday Bloody Sunday” to the 11 victims of the Enniskillen bombing. Speaking of the ongoing troubles, he tells the audience, “there are two sides to this story, and I, for one, am sick of both of them.” During “Bad,” he gets a balloon and walks around with it briefly. After singing the climactic “fade away” near the end of the song, he uses a pair of scissors to cut the balloon loose from its string and let it fly into the night sky. Two more balloons — red and white, appropriately enough — make their way to the stage during “New Year’s Day.” During “Party Girl,” Bono’s wife, Ali, comes on stage for the traditional champagen celebration. Bono opens the bottle and pours himself and Ali a glass. He gives her a long kiss before she leaves the stage. After “Stand By Me,” all four band members sit together on the front edge of the stage, prompting Bono to joke that they’re appearing the Dolly Parton Show. Edge eventually gets up and grabs a bass guitar and the show ends with “40.” Terrific show overall, couldn’t have asked for more
