Description

1995 was a massive year for Van Halen. The band released Balance and just like the 3 previous albums it debuted at no 1. The band were booked for a 131 dates tour (and it would be another success grossing over 30 million dollars). The tour began on March 11th (where this album is recorded) and it was a rough start. Sammy Hagar was flu-stricken and Eddie’s knees wobbled as he looked out over a capacity crowd of over nine thousand fans as he prepared to play sober for virtually the first time in his career. Both Alex and Eddie were at the time suffering from poor physical condition. Eddie had painful hip injury and his brother was wearing a neck brace. The set list are made up of VH classics from the Sammy Hagar era plus a few old ones. The Balance tour was their biggest and many would say their best since Sammy Hagar had taken over as vocalist in 1985. The physical problems however weren’t the only ones brewing for the band behind the scenes: Relations between Eddie and singer Sammy Hagar were strained during the making of Balance, and they didn’t get any better on the road. In the end, if the tumult waiting for the band added more than a bit of sad irony to the title of the album they were promoting, the Balance tour also delivered more than a few reminders of why they were one of the biggest rock bands on the planet. At the end of an era, with doctors and lawyers waiting in the wings, Van Halen still brought the house down.
