Description

Meet Me In was recorded at Tempodrom in Berlin on June the 6th back in 2002. Van Morrison isnt a stranger to hard work but travelling through foreign lands and living a vagabond life isnt something that are interesting to Van Morrison anymore but just a troublesome duty to him. So when he went out on yet another unloved tour in 2002 it was due to a request and demand from the record company and not because he wanted or searched for more contact with his public. But when he hits the stage it shows that he still finds pleasure on letting his music come to life. At 8 pm, his band stands in the spotlight of the sold-out arena and sifts through a contemporary instrumental ballad before the guitarist shouts into the microphone; Ladies and Gentlemen, Mister Vaaaan Morrisooon. At the same time, the 56-year-old, playing the saxophone enters the stage and ignores the loud applause. His musicians swing in muted jumpin’jive, noble, ornate, correct. And Morrison plays his saxophone with precisely those imprinted phrases, with which he later lets his wonderful bowling voice radiate as well. The band also brought in the Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer as a special guest for the evening. Musically, Van Morrison, who played in show bands between Belfast and London as a teenager before returning to his roots in the sixties with the theme classics such as Here Comes The Night, has long since returned to his roots. To Blues, Gospel, Jazz. He pays homage to the music of black America, he sings the blues so soulfully and humbly that a white man can not sing better. After years of searching, immersing himself in esoteric, spiritual worlds in which one did not always want to follow, the man who seldom smiles finds his salvation in the blues of a Sonny Boy Williamson. Morrison’s music is an alloy of noble sounds. The folklore of its Irish homeland flows with it just as much as the country music of the American South. In Days Like This there is a light reggae rhythm under the voice. Morrison plunges into the blues harp, plays the guitar sensitively, grabs the saxophone again and again, and when the show is over the band doesn’t bother to leave and return for the encores. Instead they go directly into two more hits Brown Eyed Girl, his first solo hit, and Gloria, the hit from the old theme days. Thank you very much and then he walks off the stage. As soon as hes is gone the hall light goes on. So even if Van Morrison aren’t found of travelling anymore or talk much with his audience he still seemed to have had some fun for some short moments.
