Vananidrs history begins in the mid 90s as Hydra, then they were called Synodus Horrenda for their second album before changing name to Vananidr. The band has been building momentum for every record and Vananidr’s second album Road North feels more aggressive then their self titled debut. The formula is still consistent with their first album, but the epic and symphonic aspects are somewhat emphasized here. The second album was written and performed by Eriksson alone and its very apparent that he has a raft of experience from previous bands, that he’s finely refined over the years. As good as the self titled debut is, it becomes plain for all to hear that Road North is something of a aural zenith of sorts; demonstrating an artist who has full creative reign to make exactly what he wanted for a black metal album. Road North is a mystique journey through some unbeaten paths, not musically, but in the atmosphere it creates. Erikssons raspy, icy cold vocals fit perfectly with the grim but hypnotic vibe of the album. If you ever wondered what second wave black metal sounds like then this is the perfect album to explore. Its distilled to its purest. A masterpiece of cold and melodic black metal.
