The Swedish masters of tormenting death metal Vanhelgd returns in their finest form with the group’s third full-length mournful opus Relics Of Sulphur Salvation. Reminiscent of the most powerful period in the Swedish melodic death metal scene ala the illustrious Gothenburg sound, Vanhelgd pummelled through track after track with an unending assault of darkness and obscurity. Each song varies from the main riffs in a myriad of transitions without losing the listener’s interest. The band doesn’t write stanza-bridge-chorus-stanza songs, but instead allows the songs to evolve, never overplaying a section or a guitar part to the listener’s annoyance. The band cleverly mixes shredded six-string sections with chord progressions on the higher notes, lead sections with doom riffs, and so on. Very important is Vanhelgd’s formula for eclectic song-structures that the listener won’t know what to expect on the next song, or on the next riff, without getting the impression that Relics Of Sulphur Salvation is an album with disjointed pieces instead of songs. It’s what separates Vanhelgd from the sea of pretenders. This is a fine example of Swedish death metal and without doubt the groups most glorious defining moment in their discography.
