When Venom first appeared in the early 80s, they sent a shockwave through the metal underground almost immediately. Catching the attention of both metalheads and punks, the band was emulated by the former and turned into camp icons by the latter. Their debut single, In League With Satan, wasnt just the worlds first taste of Venom but also the dawn of black metal, a devilish brand of hard rock which has had an indelible influence on the metal gigants of the 21st century. When most people think of Black Metal, corpse-paint and church burning Norwegians come to mind these days, but Venom really originated something unique for that genre, laying down the foundation for many imitators and admirers alike…. yet Venom manages to remain in a class all its own. Truly, the fore-fathers of Black Metal, a term non-existent before their emergence, who at least entertainment-wise, have given the Devil his due. While not actual Satanists, Venom has served to veritably open the gate for diabolical expression in the metal arena. This debut has all the classic Venom trademarks; raw basement style production, Cronos distorted bass and highly influential growling vocal style, Mantas’ incredibly distorted buzzsaw guitars and Abbadon’s sloppy but ultimately adequate drumming. In League With Satan is such a classic tune in every way and the B-side, Live Like An Angel, are incredibly raw and filthy high speed proto-thrash. This single is a must have in any serious metal vinyl collection
