The US power metal scene of the mid-to-late 1980s wasn’t perhaps the biggest subgenre in metal music, but it was definitely way above an underground level at the time. The genre’s most successful bands were those who pushed toward a more progressive style with MTV-friendly ballads, such as Queensryche and Fates Warning. Vicious Rumors on the other hand relied more on the genre’s core ingredients; rapid speed and heavy riffs with lots of shred and melodic vocals. That is also what defines the US power metal sound if you ask me. The band was formed in Santa Rosa, California in 1980 by guitarist Geoff Thorpe (the band’s only constant member). The band released a strong debut album with Soldiers Of The Night in 1985. But when vocalist Gary St. Pierre left, the classic Vicious Rumors line-up was born. New vocalist Carl Albert, guitarists Thorpe and Mark McGee, bassist Starr, and drummer Howe would release their sophomore album Digital Dictator in 1987. An album that is excellent from start to finish. If you have any interest in American power metal then this is a genre classic. A top five Us power metal album of all time
