When talking about French heavy metal in the 80s, people always talk about bands like Blaspheme, Sortilege and ADX. While those bands are undeniably excellent and deserving of praise, I’m here to shine some light on the short lived and under-appreciated Voodoo Child. France was apparently teeming with extremely talented vocalists in the 80’s, and Manu Gonzales was no exception. Though he may not have demonstrated astonishing range like some of his more celebrated countrymen such as Zouille and Marc Fery, he absolutely deserves to be mentioned in the same breath. He sounds like no one else that I can think of, and delivers an endless string of extremely effective, catchy melodies. It’s a shame that this is seemingly the beginning and end of his musical career. Despite coming out in 1985, the guitars on this album really have no thrash influence at all. The riffs are generally of the midpaced variety, a bit light on crunch but never light on quality. There’s definitely some Judas Priest to be found here, and Destin in particular has a great extended solo that absolutely screams 70’s Priest. There’s not a weak track on this thing, with Destin and Cocaine Tush being two of the strongest. If you love other French 80s metal band on Devils Records then you cant miss out on this one.
