Rare original 1990 Mexican pressing
The 1960s are considered to be the golden age for rock music in Mexico; during this decade, rock groups frequently dominated the music charts and many of them became teen idols. Mexican guitarist Santana made it big in Usa in the late 60s. In 1971 the two day Festival Rock y Ruedas de Avándaro, was held and became known as The Mexican Woodstock as it was expected to attract a maximum of 25,000 concertgoers but about 300,000 showed up. The government helped some stranded attendees at the end of the festival by sending 300 buses. 1971 was also the year when this band was formed but it would take another 2 years before they settled for the name of Vox Populi. At this time the whole hippie era had faded away and many classic rock bands started to move into the progressive and hard rock direction. However after the student protests in 1968 the government and music industry gave little support to rock bands during the seventies. And the whole rock culture became an underground movement. Many bands suffered from it and had to perform for free in tiny places. Vox Populi were one of those bands that struggled through the 70s together with acts such as Perro Fantastico, Mara, Stray Cat, Rock Moviloy and many more. Vox Populi is still active but have only released two albums during their long career, the self titled disc in 1984 and Angel Fugaz in 1990. The debut album is more heavy blues oriented while this second disc is more classic rock/alternative rock. Both discs are hard to find and if you want to dig more into the Mexican rock scene then check out this band
