Epilogue is Vulcano’s thirteenth longplayer and it sees the core duo – guitarist/main songwriter Zhema guitars and singer Luiz Carlos Louzada have been working together since 1997 – in top form, highlighting their unique chemistry. I have no one who could replace Luiz Carlos, Zhema ponders. I give him a vocal line, and he returns it much improved, it’s just impressive. Epilogue delivers some high intensity, which leaves nothing but scorched earth in less than 30 minutes. And if you want to take the title Epilogue literally, you are mistaken, since the band has no plans to put the intstruments on the shelves. The are always working on keeping the Brazilian old-school spirit alive. There are bands all over the country now, he concludes, but progress brought a lot of technique in the execution of songs, which – In my opinion – quickly becomes boring. Epiloque has plenty for old-school thrash/death fans to admire. There are plenty of headbangable riffs and quality solos, the vocals are impressively performed, and the rhythm and tone is as good as the band has ever done. Although Vulcano have never quite reached the heights of fellow thrash/death countrymen Sarcófago or Sepultura, and been a long way from rubbing shoulders with the great pioneering act Possessed, they’ve managed to develop a legacy of their own, one that puts them on the map not just in Brazil, but for metalheads who’ve a tendency to look deeper into thrash/death. 13 albums down the road and the band has managed to continue to be just as energetic and ferocious as how they first started off all those years ago. What they’ve achieved over the last 4 decades is certainly commendable.
