A Patch Of Blue was a movie made in 1965 and it features Elizabeth Hartman, Shelly Winters (who won an Oscar for best supporting actress) and Sidney Poitier. The original soundtrack was made by composer Jerry Goldsmith and it was a subtler works, well worth hearing whether you’ve seen the movie or not. However the movie and soundtrack would also give rise to an even more enduing work of art: a jazz recording of themes from Goldsmith’s score by an unusual and venturesome quartet, led by the vibraphonist Walt Dickerson and featuring the maniford, mysterious Sun Ra on piano and harpsichord, an instrument rarely used in a jazz setting. Their album, Impressions Of A Patch Blue, is a high point of modern jazz. Dickerson plays vibes as John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy played saxophone – with astonishing whirlwind flurries of notes and jolting harmonic leaps and Sun Ra’s chordal interpoloations, halting melodies, and quizzical arpeggios open abysses of wonder beneath them. It is the last album Dickerson recorded before his decade long sabbatical from jazz before his comeback in the mid-1970s.
