Despite being together in some form or another going back as far as ’82, it took Wargasm over six years to finally strike a record deal and deliver the goods, which is marginally atypical East Coast thrash stuffed to the gills with lethal riffage. Being somewhat logistically isolated from the fruitful New York scene, Wargasm were free to hammer out their own odes to the depraved and had the chops to hang with some of the best. Whether or not the band deserved the unfortunate fate that befell them (one that mirrors literally hundreds of mid-level thrash acts) – Why Play Around? is a harrowing maelstrom of quality thrash riffs that hardly lets up. While arguably deficient in a potent level of variation, those lacking the prior privilege of exposure to this Boston three-piece should certainly begin their journey here. The brothers Spillberg are the propellant that drives the rhythm section, one that fires off more than a few chug-based romps that build and release tension in an affable manner, and a multitude of riveting thrash breaks abound. Rich doesn’t have the most distinctive style I’ve ever heard, but his delivery is ballistic and incessant, ripped straight from the rehearsal room and directly into every wise thrasher’s cerebrum. Look no further than “Humanoid” to get your fix, which makes sensational use of the fabled East Coast mosh riffing style and just totally kills it from front to back. Wargasm are hardly done, as Why Play Around? features more than a few riff behemoths that can stand toe-to-toe with just about anyone. “Undead” is a true frenzy, featuring a speed metal centrifuge bolstering Bob Mayo’s sneering vocal acrobatics. Earlier in the procession, the one-two evisceration of “Wasteland” and “Revenge” levels the stage in a convincing manner. Really, every full song here is that good save for the band’s eponymous number, which pushes the runtime a modicum more than necessary. If not for the presence of more quality riffs, I would say skip that one along with the flippant instrumental numbers. This leaves Mayo himself, who will undoubtedly embody the biggest dividing presence for those approaching Wargasm. His tone is pretty nasal and upfront, but annoying vocals and thrash metal seem to go hand-in-hand, so I can definitely consider it an acquired taste; one easily acclimated to. The production values are also surprisingly high considering the imprint and time of release. Spillberg’s guitar tone is feral, diabolic and vibrant throughout, soiled and straight for the jugular concerning attack. With enough slashing grooves interwoven within the primary galloping volley, I find no reason not to proclaim Why Play Around? as one of the stronger individual efforts of the period in this regard alone. I can’t gush quite enough about this record, so obviously I recommend simply checking it out. Wargasm are very likely the best Boston thrash band you’ve never heard, and have the firepower to live up to such a designation. Though it’s not the easiest to categorize at times, Why Play Around? invokes plenty of that straight ripping sensation courtesy of such a barbed and visceral riffset. Its belligerent propulsion carries it a long way, to the top of my personal list and a recommendation I will continue to make. This band deserves more attention.
