Description

Double album on black vinyls with a metal plate. Limited 50 numbered copies

Released in 1989, Headless Children was a return to form, but it couldn’t reverse the band’s slump, and W.A.S.P. disbanded soon after the tour and little was heard from the band between 1990 and 1992. During these yeas there really wasn’t a band and Blackie was instead working on a solo album. Lawless had the idea to make a partly autobiographical concept album and then The Who’s Pete Townshend (himself a veteran of the semi-autobiographical concept album), encouraged him to go for it. The story revolved around a disaffected youth, Jonathan, who becomes a rock star but gets tangled in the machinations of the music business. Lawless handled rhythm guitar, bass, vocal, and keyboard duties himself, and renowned studio musician Bob Kulick filled in Holmes’ vacated position, while a pair of drummers were used (including the drummer on The Headless Children, Frankie Banali). The songs weren’t a radical departure stylistically for W.A.S.P., and the record label wanted to release it as a Wasp album instead of a Blackie Lawless solo album. The Crimson Idol then got released during the grunge heyday and it wasn’t a success so when the band released the greatest-hits set, First Blood…Last Cuts, a year later it seemed like it would be W.A.S.P.’s last chapter. However over the years the album has continued to sell and its now considered to be W.a.s.p. greatest moment, and its their best selling album, and its one of the best concept albums in the history of heavy metal, up there with Queensryche’s Operation Mindcrime and Savatage’s Streets. A few live tracks from the Monsters Of Rock appearance has been released live as B-sides on singles but otherwise we have little recordings from The Crimson Idol Tour. This double album was recorded at Cambridge Corn Exchange in Cambridge, Uk on the 22nd of October 1992, exactly two months after that Donington appearance. What we have here among all the classics is 5 tracks from The Crimson Idol; The Invisible Boy, Chainsaw Charlie (Murders In The New Morgue), The Idol, The Great Misconceptions Of Me (here built up as an extended version that exceeds the original studio version in length) and I Am One. So with warts and all here you can experience a show from that tour that followed the bands masterpiece that was The Crimson Idol.
