Controversy followed the Los Angeles metal band W.A.S.P everywhere they played in the early 1980s. In September 1984, following the release of their debut album, they came to the UK for the very first time and some local authorities and churches tried to get their shows banned. The shows in September were 19th TV Club in Dublin, 21st Mayfair in Newcastle, 23rd Powerhouse in Birmingham, 24th Lyceum in London, 25th Palais in Nottingham and 26th City Hall in St.Albans. The 24th show at the Lyceum has become famous as the show were taped for the bands first live video. For this album a tape from Tuesday the 25th of September has been dusted off. This show at The Palais in Nottingham is something completely different. The controversy surrounding the band due to the explicit nature of their live show was no secret and several tried to banned the show. To be able to perform this night the band had to sign a contract that they would use no pyro, no gore and no swearing. The local review the day after read: After all the pre-show publicity and the numerous protests, Wasp went on with their act – without the stunts. But to the thousand strong audience the stage antics were not necessary, Blackie Lawless and his band won the hearts of the denim and leather clad mass at the Nottingham Palais. As heavy metal music goes, it was very loud, had all the usual cliches and guitar poses; and the band showed they could actually play and did not require the alleged stage antics to give an hours worth of entertainment. The stage was sparse except fot he two giant sliding skulls, the ever present dry ice and smoke bombs. Blackie quickly worked the crowd into a frenzy as the band pounded out the raw, savage songs from their album Wasp. Down On Your Knees, Tormentor, Hellion and Sleeping (In The Fire) were played with power and greeted with football crowd-like cheers. Blackie, all six-foot-four of him, surprisingly did nto have much to say for himself; but he quipped; We had a lot more to show you tonight but the local clergy around here have put a stop to that. The pouring of theatrical blood and the hurling of feathers from a pillow was the nearest the band came to being outrageous. They were very tame. The band hit the audience with the sheer volume and velocity. There was no room for the fainthearted. Yet there was no swearing or obscenities. It was a new band trying to win over an audience and in true American style Wasp succeeded by being brash and giving the audience what they wanted…or nearly. Finally a word about the audience. Heavy metal may not be to everyone’s liking, but the Nottingham fans are loyal, and enjoy themselves and cause no trouble. For those in Nottingham who go to rock, we salute you. This album also features the three tracks that Arthur Kane (New York Dolls) recorded with Black Lawless back in 1976 under the Killer Kane name
