Within Temptation was formed as The Portal in April 1996 by the couple Robert Westerholt and Sharon den Adel. The band landed a record deal thanks to the strenght of their Enter demo. The four tracks from their demo would end up on their debut album, also called Enter. One of the four new tracks that were written for the album was Restless, that became the bands first ever single. The band were at the time performing gothic beauty and the beast metal that were popular in the late 90s but the band were so much more than bands like Theatre Of Tragedy or Tristania. Sure, the contrast between ethereal female vocals (the beauty) and male death growls (the beast) is a leitmotif that dominates the material but so are the melodic death/doom influences. However the tracks picked for their first single, Restless and the Pearls Of Light ballad hints that the band were into pop-tinged symphonic metal. Restless will remain a true gem of the female-fronted gothic metal genre and the single also showed that thanks to the strength of Sharon Den Adel’s voice this was a band to look out for.
