Description
The Wynona Riders are an East Bay pop punk band formed in 1988 as Miss Conduct but a year later, when Ron Greer (Skip) joined the band as the lead singer, they decided it was time to change their name and they chose to name themselves after the actress, Winona Ryder. With their split single with Jolt and this “Some Enchanted Evening”, both releasead in 1992, the band showed that the Winona Ryders were able to put the tiniest bit of a twist on the average pop-punk format — the record adds a bit of snot and attitude to the typical Lookout release. It has that quintessential 90’s punk rock sound in the way it was recorded and the singer is a bit shouty here and there so it winds up at an almost interesting spot that lies somewhere between pop-punk and hardcore. The songs are tight, reasonably catchy and still more than 20 years later, it’s still feel like a real breath of fresh air. The songs in general are not packed full of the sugary hooks that so many of the other Lookout bands had at the time. Though certainly not depressing or evil sounding in any way; the songs are a bit darker than some of their peers. Given that punk bands tend to gravitate toward one end or the other and stay firmly there, a little credit has to be given to the Winona Ryders for carving out a punk niche that hasn’t already been done to death. So all in all, it’s a pretty decent record.
