Finland’s enigmatic Xysma were formed in the late 80s in Turku and started out as a death metal grindcore act. They came out just when the grindcore were at its peak with bands such as Repulsion and Carcass. They only managed to release one demo before getting signed. Their first proper release was the Above The Mind Of Morbidity mini abum, released in 1990. Over the years the band would try out so many different musical paths that you could never know what to expect. During their later works the band boldly started to incorporate elements such as 60s pop and 70s hardrock. At the time when the band released Girl On The Beach, in 1998, it was probably the most matured version of Xysma ever. Here you can hear influences from anything between Sinatra, Beach Boys to Jimi Hendrix to early punk, hardcore and stoner metal. Overall Girl On A Beach is a wonderful musical achievement that should be widely recognized as well as the high degree of perfection of the work. However the fans that fell in love in the band in the early years had probably abandon the band at this time and the band were not gaining that much new fans that they deserved. Girl On A Beach gained a very little attention from both inside and outside of the metal scene. Open minded stoner rock, hardcore, post rock fans etc. should give this one a chance as you will be greeted with a surprise. Hopefully this album will re-evaluation with time.
