Yeastie Girlz (their name obviously a take-off on the Beastie Boys) were a short-lived feminist rap trio comprised of members Jane, Cammie, and Kate, hailing from the fertile punk scene of Gilman St. in Berkeley, San Francisco. The trio were a radically hilarious feminist, queer a-capella rap band and they released a lone 7″ single in 1988, Ovary Action (issued on the independent Lookout! label), which contained a total of ten (only one of which stretches past the two-minute mark) hilarious, explicit, sex-loving acapella rap tunes that masterfully combine serious subjects with the Yeasties irrepressible humour. “Sue Your Friends” is about our litigious society, sung to the tune of “Row row your boat” with lines like “Sue sue sue your friends, sue your mom and dad, everybody does it so you know it’s totally rad”. They also has a live Gilman track of “Ode An Die Freude” which talks about how to make the applicator of a tampon into a musical instrument, pretty inventive. Other tracks worth mention is “FCC”, “You Suck,” about giving head not just receiving it and “Put A Lid On Tt,” about birth/STD control. There is also a Buzzcocks cover (“Orgasm Addict” of course) that i have a bit of problems with. Its not that i hate it because its a woman singing it but it fails big time compared to the original Buzzcocks version. Overall a political smarts and razor-sharp wit single that probably inspired the Riot Girl movement as well as it inspired and gave name to a Norwegian feminism and queer magazine called Ovary Action. Its not something that you play alot because just some are good while others are horrible however it obvious became an inspirational single and a landmark release through time. Besides this single, not much else was heard from Yeastie Girlz.
