Description

Zombie Lake started in 2003 when Axeman Derek Schilling (of hatecore legends Neglect) wrote an email to a German Thrash Metal legends Protector tribute site and got reply from original vocalist Martin Missy. They became friends and talked about doing an international band with Derek living in New York and Martin (now living in Sweden). Derek sent Martin 3 songs that were recorded with his friend Anthony Dalessio (dr) in 1999 and made the Metal for the Masses demo 2005. After spreading these demos around the underground, the band was offered a record deal with Iron Shield Records. The debut album Plague Of The Undead is raw and old school thrash metal build on pure aggression, fairly close to an old-school Sodom vibe. Plague Of The Undead is a zombie themed album with music recorded in New York while Martin recorded his voice at Sunlight Studios in Sweden with Tomas Skogsberg. The album starts with what sounds like civil unrest in the wake of the genesis of zombie apocalypse, Zombie Lake build their sound slowly and with caution through steady drum beats and the bite of the symbols whilst chugging thrash riffs rise to crescendo as the rhythm guitar sounds out the alarm. The summit reached and things descend into thrash based chaos as Blood, Blood, Blood! gets fast and gets aggressive! if the easily picked up lyrics don’t hook you right in the guitar solos surely will, and whilst Zombie Lake don’t quite play full throttle thrash metal, their more melodic style is endearing and still decidedly old school. Whether its due to the distance between band members I’m not sure but Plague of the Undead is certainly not the tightest of affairs and I think the band know this. I say this because the album isn’t sloppy or disjointed but it is a little tame and moderate, maybe as a pre-emptive strike by the band to weed out any missed beats or notes. As an end result then you have an album that isn’t a full on thrash onslaught, more a measured foray into the bands career with a decent and well written album that focuses more on song craft and lyrical content, it’s an approach I favour and respect! Track listing: 1. Blood Blood Blood 2. Emperor of the Walking Dead 3. Flesh for Frankenstein 4. The Cemetery 5. Deceased and Obssessed 6. Brain Frenzy 7. Blessed Are the Dead 8. Strontium Dog 9. War of the Worlds 10. Zombie Lake
